Kazakhstan’s radioactive legacy

Sixty years ago, the Soviet Union detonated its first nuclear weapon, nicknamed “First Lightning”, at a test facility on the steppe of northeast Kazakhstan (formerly the Kazakh SSR). The test site, named the Semipalatinsk Polygon, would go on to host 456 atomic explosions over its 40-year existence. Residents in the surrounding area became unwitting guinea pigs, exposed to the aftereffects of the bombs both intentionally and unintentionally. The radiation has silently devastated three generations of people in Kazakhstan – the total number affected is thought to be more than one million – creating health problems ranging from thyroid diseases, cancer, birth defects, deformities, premature aging, and cardiovascular diseases. Life expectancy in the area is seven years less than the national average of Kazakhstan. Photographer Ed Ou has graciously shared with us these photos from the area, with thanks to the excellent Reportage by Getty Images. (25 photos total)

Adil was born blind and afflicted with Infantile Cereberal Paralysis (ICP) and hydrocephalia, as a result of his mothers exposure to radiation during years of Soviet weapons testing during the Cold War. He was abandoned by his parents, and is now cared for in an orphanage. (Ed Ou/Reportage by Getty Images)

06/06/09 Wow no updates for a long time!

I have been trying my best to keep up with all the emails, phone calls (I answer all phone calls from 9-5pm Central time Mon-Fri (952)236-7243), shipping and repairs around here lately and haven’t made any time to write any blurbs on the blog… I’m going to see if we can integrate blog software on the new site (you’re on our new site by the way!) that should make things easier.

Oh yeah… this site you are currently on went live on 06/04/09 at about 1am. It’s still not as polished as we would like and I’m sure we will keep finding little things we want to change throughout the site. It will probably always be a work in progress.

Our hope is that you the customer can quickly and easily find the part or repair you need with this completely new site. If there is something that you think is broken or does not work very well please let us know! We want to make it as easy as possible for you to find exactly what you need.

I hope you enjoy the new site!

10/28/08 Darntoothysam.com Introduction

This space will be used to print my thoughts on current digital cameras, past digital cameras, what to look for and what to avoid when buying a camera, tips and tricks for using cameras… you may even email me with questions or topics that you would like me to talk about. I probably can’t answer all requests but I will try to get to as many as I can!

So where do we start? How about with the name “Darntoothysam”?
Darntoothysam is simply an anagram for my full name, Thomas Drayton. I was looking for a new I.D. for that big online auction website and wanted something unique and different. Even though the name is longer than what marketing specialists would tell you to use, and it has nothing to do with digital camera repair; I’m keeping it. I personally like the name and it’s originality.

Hmm… what’s next… how about our logo?
My wife recently redesigned my logo to the current logo you now see. If you cover the “teeth” at the bottom of the image and look at it sideways… it’s a camera! Our previous logo was a pirate I had drawn decades ago that my wife edited and made presentable. The name I gave him was none other than “Darn Toothy Sam” of course. (YAR!)
